It's been over 2 years since my original review. The review is still valid for this DVD (see below). However, the DVD is like sugar water and will only get you so far before you need to grow. So, consider this DVD as the first baby step to a lifelong process of learning and enjoyment. It is a good 1rst step. I found it takes years to learn to play well. But if you stick to it, and overcome the plateaus, you will amaze yourself with how good you can learn to play: and how enjoyable it is...

Also, a tip. If you are serious about learning, buy a good quality guitar for starters. You can save ALLOT of money and buy a used Martin or Taylor guitar, but make sure you have a friend who is an expert check it out before you buy it. A good guitar will keep you interested. A cheap guitar will make sure you lose interest fast.

This is the best guitar tutorial I have ever used. Peroid. It's actually enjoyable.

I've been trying to play on and off for the past 35 years. I have always given up hope. One tutorial wants you to learn advanced music theory and you never get to why: I got bored and gave up.

Private lessons usually leads to a sleaze type trying to make more money so they progress you as slow as possible. On top of that, you must watch their ego while they show off what they know; never teaching you the inside scope of what they are doing.

John McCarthy is the guitarist on this DVD. He has a great personality, is an excellent guitarist, and presents usable knowledge about how to play.

What to expect...
1. No music theory, get a book for that
2. Nothing offensive at all, just a great mixture of soft blues, soft folk, soft rock, light reggae, very light jazz, very light funk.
3. Accessible lessons that will not leave you feeling left out. But do the work!

Now, for a word of caution...
There are no short cuts. Watching a DVD is easy, it takes no talent and less then an hour. Mastering the lessons on this DVD will take weeks of practice. It's all about building muscle memory, dexterity, and skill. Don't buy any books or DVD's if you do not want to spend the time, experience the frustration, and invest in learning: There really are no short cuts. However, you'll start to smile as you begin to see yourself making music: for me, the first time in my 49 years of life.

If you can't afford the DVD, you can always buy it used, get it at the library, or go to YouTube and see other lessons. If you can afford this DVD, and you have a few weeks, I can't recommend this DVD more highly.
