Essential Elements Violin BK1+CD Review

This was my first book when I went looking for beginning violin instruction. What sold me was that it also teaches sight reading in conjunction with playing notes on the violin. It starts with one string at a time in the first position, then combines strings. The book contains 193 examples, charts and diagrams all over the place, as well as a cd AND dvd. The cd contains audio for examples 1-71, but the dvd has all of them. The musical backgrounds of the examples are not boring or monotonous sounding as one might expect, but are fresh and contemporary, ranging in nearly all different styles of music.
While my violin teacher has me using the Suzuki method, that method assumes you already know how to read sheet music, which was not the case for me, staring out. And in between my weekly lessons, I refer to EE2000 books 1, 2, and 3 all the time for additional practice.
I highly recommend EE2000 as a start point. It will provide a strong foundation for more challenging efforts on the violin. But nothing can take the place of one on one lessons with a good teacher.
