On November 2nd, 2010, this legendary concert will be available on DVD and Blu-ray through Warner Bros. Records. 'The Big Four Live From Sofia' includes full shows from all four bands on a two-disc set as well as behind the scenes and interview footage.

These four acts broke out of the underground thrash movement in the 1980's to dominate the metal world, selling millions of records and packing arenas across the globe. Despite huge demand, these musical giants had never shared the same stage. The legendary June 22nd, 2010, concert from the tour's stop of the Sonisphere Festival in Sofia, Bulgaria aired the same day in 79 movie theaters in the U.K, over 450 theaters in over 140 markets in the US, as well as being beamed into
theaters in Europe, Canada, Latin America, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand.

In December 2009, the bands announced that they would be joining forces to take part in the traveling Sonisphere Festival for only 7 shows across Europe. This one-time only event, from the Sofia show, made it possible for fans far and wide to participate in what otherwise was a very limited run of dates.

This is a review for the blu-ray 2 disc set. On the first disc you get Anthrax, followed by Megadeth and then Slayer's set. On the second disc you get the Metallica set and the bonus features. I will break down the setlists at the bottom of the review.

First the sound is amazing in my opinion, as is the picture. I thought the overall mix on all four sets was really good. I've read the one review about Mustaine's vocals, I didn't notice it, so can't really comment on whether it has or hasn't been remixed. It wasn't a concern for me personally.
The bonus features include a behind the sccenes documentary which includes interviews and a peak at the Am I Evil? rehearsal backstage which is just good fun. I like back stage stuff and interviews so I dig that extra feature.

So for the bulk features of this "product" I give it five stars, good picture, good sound, bonus features are nice added touch. I couldnt really find a reason to deduct any stars based on the product. The camera shots are typical concert fodder, close stage center, back stage left, over the crowd, close up floating over crowd and behind the band looks. I appreciate the traditional camera shots, I am not really a fan of the waving, roving camera techniques where you flashy, quick looks and can't follow anything. I like to get long shots of the guitar when there are solos etc. So , I was happy with the way this was shot.

Now for my personal opinions. I was very happy with the setlists for Megadeth and Metallica. Megadeth didn't waste time chatting, they went from song to song and really delivered. I've seen Megadeth live many times and they are always incredible, this is no exception, what really got me going for the Megadeth set was the guitar, those riffs are just so amazing, and Chris Broderick is an amazing addition to this lineup. His live performances with Nevermore were astounding and when he joined Megadeth I wondered if it would be enough for a guitarist of his caliber. Clearly it is, he is having a blast.

I was unhappy with Slayer's setlist. I have seen Slayer live and they are really worth seeing. Songs like World Painted Blood, Jihad, Hate Worldwide, Beauty Through Order would have been better replaced with Dead Skin Mask (I can't believe they didn't play this one), Expendable Youth, Die by the Sword. Too bad, but again, this is just my preference. I really recommend the double live CD Decade of Aggression. It's an amazing set of songs.

Metallica setlist mirrors their previous blu-ray release. I think it's a solid set of songs and they sounded very good, the mix is great. This is when you see all the guys coming together and perform together and that is alot of fun. I've seen Metallica live every tour since 1986 and I can say this past tour has had some great setlists. I could have done without N.E.M., but hey the crowd loved it. If you have any questions I'll try to answer them.

((***Side ponder*** I wondered who decided what order the bands should perform in? I found it curious to have Megadeth perform before Slayer as they are more widely known.))

If you dig all four, or one or two of these bands, this is worth owning and was alot of fun to watch.

Manhasset MH5001 Orchestra Stand

This was my second Manhasset Orchestra Stand, but my other one is the standard model - which lacks the accessory shelf. I also use a Manhasset Voyager stand for rehearsals and gigs, since it's portable. Prior to this stand, I've used the plastic Manhasset slide-on shelf to hold accessories. (E.g., pencil, tuner, valve oil; I play trumpet.) This stand, also called the M50, is better, since the built-in storage shelf is part of the stand itself. The shelf is plenty high, deep, wide and strong.

These professional caliber Orchestra Stands are sturdy but weigh only a few pounds. They have steel legs and shaft and use stiff sheet-aluminum for the large music and accessory shelves. The rivets and powder coat are flawless. It will hold a 2" thick pile of music without the tray sliding down or the shelf angle changing - even at full height. (Do NOT oil any part of this stand.) You can pencil annotations to the music with minimal stand wobbling.

By holding one of the legs down with your foot, you can adjust height and shelf angle with one hand, since there are no knobs to loosen/tighten. This is a decided advantage over stands with a tightening knob, when you need to stand to play at a gig, or, you're just in a hurry. Maximum height is just over 48" to the bottom of the shelf (61" to the top) which is sufficiently high even for a tall player (I'm 6/4).

Although I'd recommend a Manhasset Voyager (folding) as a carry-around stand, I know several players that carry the standard Manhasset Orchestra stand with them in their car trunk.

The stand's interior holding mechanism is replaceable should it wear out; however, my original Manhasset Orchestra Stand is 25+ years old, is used almost every day, and except for where it's been scratched, it works as well as the day it was new.

These Manhasset Orchestra stands are also stable when playing outside on grass since the feet are so large. They have a professional look which works well in a stage/formal setting. The aluminum shelf does not have bent-over edges, which allows music/wind clips, stand lights, or virtually any other accessory, to be easily attached. The stand comes in three pieces and it only takes about 2 minutes to put it together once you gather the tools (flat screw-driver and open-end or adjustable wrench). I also bought the Manhasset Floor Protectors, which are much better than they were 10 years ago.

Warburton Brass Player's PETE

This Personal Embouchure Training Device is a high quality product - perfectly machined, sturdy, and silver-plated brass. It's also available in a gold plated model or a much lighter-weight plastic model.

The stated goal of this exerciser is improved endurance and range, but other benefits should accrue such as better control and flexibility, and less corner-of-the-mouth air leakage (if that's a problem for you). Regardless of what you play, properly used, this device should strengthen the facial muscles supporting your embouchure beyond what you've been able to achieve by just playing your instrument.

My advice is to ignore Warburton's designation of "brass" or "woodwind" player models. Instead, there are two sizes: small and large:

- Small: called the Brass Player's PETE
- Large: called the Woodwind Player's PETE

Warburton asserts that trumpet, trombone, and tuba players all need the small exerciser and that woodwind players all need a larger PETE than brass players. That makes no sense. How could an oboe player need a larger exerciser than a tuba player?

I originally bought a silver plated Brass Player's model directly from Warburton and tried it for a few weeks. For ME, the flared end was too small for my lips to hold onto tightly while tugging on the PETE handle. As a result, little muscle workout was possible since the maximum tug force (pulling the exerciser forward without it exiting my lips) was insufficient for an isometric exercise. The small PETE's rim is only 1/4" wide. The only other brass [trumpet] player I know who bought a [small] PETE had the same experience and gave up on it.

Within their allowed 30-day-return period, I had Warburton exchange it for a large PETE, and have been using that one for a couple of months. Using it has strengthened my chops, making me very glad I own one. Noticeable improvement occurred within the first week.

Warburton recommends two exercises; see Customer Images.

Exercise 1: This is fine, but doesn't go nearly far enough. I also put the flared end of the PETE in a corner of my mouth in front of the teeth, and pull firmly to that side, resisting the tug force with my lips and facial muscles. I then do the other corner. I "tug" for a minute in each location, until it becomes uncomfortable or my lips weaken; then rest for a few seconds. I repeat each variation multiple times.

Exercise 2: Although this exercise is possible without using a PETE, using it will focus you to compress your chops toward the center of your embouchure. Press inward with your lip muscles as tightly as possible for a minute or so at a time. Rest, and repeat. I use the flared end, resting it against my teeth, allowing my lips to fully support the PETE. Don't crunch your teeth during any exercise; simply keep your mouth closed.

My routine is to do these exercises every two or three days for 15 minutes or so, after I'm done playing for the evening. You may require more, or less, time. Exercising for too short a period, too infrequently, or without significant lip tension won't produce results. Consider exercising while doing something else, like driving or watching TV, since, let's face it, these exercises are boring. (Wear a seat belt & shoulder strap while driving -- if the PETE is in your mouth and you hit something, it could damage your teeth.) Not exercising every day allows the muscles to recover/rebuild on the off days; the same principle espoused by my high-school weight-lifting coach.

As time has gone by, I've been able to tug noticeably harder on the PETE while doing Exercise 1, confirmation of increased embouchure muscle strength.

The principal benefit of these exercises has been improved playing endurance. Also, while my range [so far] has not expanded, I am able to play higher notes with more certainty, longer, and louder when called for.

Summary:

Warburton claims thousands of satisfied [small] PETE customers. However, the small size didn't work for me. Based on MY experience, I recommend the large size ("Woodwind Player's" model), sold on the Warburton web site.

The 5-star rating is for the large PETE.

DVD-Bluegrass Slow Jam for the Total Beginner Review

People, it doesn't get much easier than this when it comes to practicing at home. "Dr. Banjo" Pete Wernick slows it down even further than his successful Bluegrass Jamming video so that anyone with an acoustic instrument (even the most novice player) can get comfortable performing with other musicians.

With the help of Colorado bluegrass musicians such as Nick Forster, Sally Van Meter, Drew Emmitt and others, this video covers nearly two hours worth of folk and bluegrass standards that are sure to be familiar to almost anyone. Wernick has chosen to keep these interactive performances to their simplest form by sticking with four common music chords (G, C, D and A), and eliminating solo breaks on most of the songs.

Along with the 17 play-along songs, there are also jamming tips presented between songs. Wernick is a great motivator to get people started playing musical instruments, and his laid-back yet factual presentation shows that he is probably the best at this position. A great addition to this edition is the simultaneous viewing of the guitar player's fretting hand so that the student can be familiar with chord changes. Wernick also varies up the overall performance by having everyone at the session perform vocally. While the vocal skills vary in quality, it does give off the message that at bluegrass and folk jam sessions such as this, one doesn't have to be "professional" to have a good time performing.

The only weakness to this video is the overall production and editing. There are too many times that Wernick has make up "excuses" for changes to props and lineups that could flow better if a script was followed more closely. However, since this is being used more for educational and instructional entertainment purposes, the flaws are not a major factor.

Besides being a useful tool for the absolute beginner, this video has another useful purpose. Many musicians learn a second or third instrument to make themselves more versatile, especially when attempting to join a band. Since these are familiar songs, a guitarist attempting to learn banjo, mandolin, fiddle or whatever may find that he/she has an instant backing track to simple but complete songs to work on the new instrument.

Wernick has been a great ambassador of teaching bluegrass and folk music for a number of years, and this video helps to get his wonderful educational message out to more potential musicians who are not familiar with him. Bluegrass Slow Jam should be recommended to anyone learning a new acoustic instrument and wanting to see and hear how it is to work with other musicians before going "live."
