Roumanian Folk Dances transcribed by Zoltn SzTkely Review
Having played the original version for piano solo (which is now in the public domain), I have noted that this arrangement by Zoltan Szekely for violin and piano (published during Bartok's lifetime) is substantially different. The violin part includes frequent "bravura" double-stops and special effects (false harmonics, drones, etc.) that are appropriate for flashy violin performance, but do change the character of the piece somewhat. It's also worth noting that the piano part is significantly thicker in voicing than the original, and one of the selections (#4) is doubled in length (in transposition). This last, however, is the same in the orchestration of the piece by Bartok himself, so I think that Szekely was following the composer's practice here. It's memorable music, and well worth playing. Most of the consumer Reviews tell that the "Roumanian Folk Dances transcribed by Zoltn SzTkely" are high quality item.
