I buy this book all the time for young and adult students. For my youngest kids, I will make games out of clapping rhythms or give rewards for whatever level they can clap correctly. I use this book with a metronome at times and write in my student's assignment books speeds that they should shoot for. If I have siblings that are sharing books, I write the name of the student and a speed beside a date. For example: pg 4, Alexa, 60 bpm by June 15th, Alicia 90 bpm by June 15th - pg 5 Alicia 60 bpm by June 15th and 90 bpm by June 22nd. Sometimes I give no instructions at all and let the siblings compete on their own. The only thing I have to do is put a check mark when they have "passed a level". Maybe one sibling gets check marks and the other one gets starts or however they want to do it, but they enjoy passing each other.

With adults, I basically just hand them the book and say... Here. Learn this. They complain and mention that they've been playing piano their entire life, and they just want a few lessons. I mention that they didn't hire me to be their friend and listen to them play. They hired me to teach them to play well. They laugh and take the book, grudgingly... and usually come back the next week excited to reply all the songs they had just played for me... because they all magically sound better when the rhythms are right!

It's a great tool for a teacher who knows how to teach and who has enough personality to make it fun. That should be a requirement for music teachers anyway! It has everything a teacher could need for most students - and not just piano students.

Vol. 1, How To Play Jazz & Improvise (Book & CD Set) Review

I had read the previous version of this book over a decade ago, and this book is a huge step forward. If I had had this version back then, I probably would've been much better at jazz improv today. The only downside of this book is the information architecture (e.g. page layout); it's a bit arcane, but it's charming I guess, like that disorganized folder of important papers your music teacher might have given you when you were starting out. Content-wise, this book is filled with jazz improv gems. A must-have.

And it is a lot better then the one that clamps onto the trumpet. Get this one. I have/had the other one and it was always falling off when i would move fast or marching. This one has cause me no issues so far and i will let you know after I use it a while. I can already tell that it is going to be a better one then the clamp-on.

Grover-Trophy Clarinet Marching Lyres Review

I would not recommend this lyre, which is unfortunate considering that Amazon's selection of lyres is limited and most people have negative or uninformative reviews. This was the first lyre I have ever gotten, so I wasn't sure quite what to look for. This one in particular doesn't fit well around either of my clarinets. The wide ring gets caught under one of the keys and prevents you from playing. If you fiddle with it, you can get it to work, but you have to have your clarinet pulled apart just a bit which will change the sound and then have to compensate. Another very irritating thing during the season was the fact that when it's screwed all the way on the ring, it's tilted a little to the left, so my flip folder is not straight out in front of me. I usually would just have to loosen it, but then it would fall to the right or left again.

In the end, I do not recommend this lyre, and honestly I'm still looking for a new one on Amazon. I guess I'll just have to pick one at random and see how it ends up.

I used to have jobs doing cable installation for computer equipment (and I still have a job where labeling is relevant), and man, I can really tell you -- automated cable label-makers are both expensive and unreliable.

This pad of write-on labels saves me from insanity! It's so simple: just write, peel, apply! A plain pen or sharpie will work, or use a hand held label-maker (see details below). I can't believe this little gem was hiding under "microphone accessories" all this time without discovering it; this neat product should probably get re-listed in other Amazon categories for video and computer equipment!

This pad is made of 10 sheets of 6 labels (arranged as 3 labels horizontal, 2 labels vertical on each sheet). Removal requires a bit of fingernail activity, but it's still very convenient. My only (minor) wish is that Hosa would make the sheet perforated so empty pages (ones where all 6 labels have been used) can be torn out easily as you go through the stack -- but it's not a big deal.

The writable white area is about 1 and 1/16th inch wide by 11/16th inches tall, or pretty close to 1.0 x 0.75 inches. The label (including writable area) is a total of about 2 and 5/8th inches tall, enough to wrap around the cable (and writable area) 2 or so times. (The approximate metric measurements are 2.7cm wide, 1.75cm tall writable, and a total of 6.7cm tall.)

For those who have a lot to say on their labels (or just want it to be professional-looking), I have found that portable label makers can make labels that easily apply on top of writable area (as long as they can write multiple lines). I use Brother P-Touch 3/4-inch TZ-tape labels and a compatible label-maker, and found these font sizes to be useful:

16pt: fits 2 lines and about 6 characters wide onto the writable area, very easy to read
12pt: fits 3 lines and about 10 characters wide
9pt: fits 4 lines and about 14 characters wide
6pt: fits 5 lines and about 18 characters wide, but an eye-chart to read
