As always, you get what you pay for. This bag is by far cheaper than any I've found anywhere else, and it's padded to boot - when others weren't, not in this price range. My only qualm is that it barely fits my Rogue A body mandolin, I mean it fits, but it is snug and I had to kind of push it in which makes me uncomfortable. Also it goes in head first, as it doesn't open completely like a clamshell, so you kinda have to push it in there blindly, hoping it doesn't snag on anything or turn the pegs, etc. Anyway, it'll do for now.

Eight strings, brilliant sound but unfortunately much too quiet when you play live on stage with your band. This is the deplorable situation that faces most mandolin players who play in a bluegrass, folk or rock bands. What can you do?

So far, the solutions were passive piezo pickups for mandolins. Those are available either as transducers which stick to the instrument's top or install in the mandolin's bridge. So far, so good - unfortunately, in many cases both ways sound like almost everything but not a mandolin. It sounded very synthetic and not authentic at all.

Instruments with a short scale and high string tension like mandolin cause another problem in combination with a bridge pickup. Every time your plectrum touches the string you will hear a "click" before you hear the actual tone. And when it gets down to business at the live gig it comes to an bad end: Because those passive piezo pickups only supply a little output signal your audience gets a lot of hissing and undesired feedback instead of pure mandolin tones. You have to be kidding! There are good pickups for everything including zither! Why not mandolin?

Had to trim the transducer pad stud and the jack lead was too short for an endpin application. The pickup exceeded expectations in quality of sound. Truly awesome! You will need to drill holes in your instrument so this needs to be done by an experienced person. In my case and on my instrument ir was sooooo worth it.

I thought this would be white, or at least creamy white, but actually it's creamy grey, almost looks like cement.
Apart from that, the surface is rough, so I can't really apply my decal stickers on them - a real bummer! The case itself is plain so stickers are a-must to bring the case to life, but the surface makes it almost impossible...

Playing Time - 30 minutes -- Mel Bay's "Super" series includes a number of DVDs (or tapes) that quickly and efficiently cover basic ground. After getting in tune, Joe Carr demonstrates various picking exercises for the beginner. Building off the A-scale, the DVD shows the right hand strokes, but there is no separate view of the left hand notes. That's OK because the tablature clearly shows where to fret the instrument.
