Aquila Corde makes a wide variety of strings for antique acoustic instruments from genuine gut to several different polymers in various quality and price ranges. These classical banjo strings are in the lowest price range and are designed to be played on replica or genuine 19th-century fretless banjos as a modern substitute for real gut.

They are a brighter white and slightly smaller gauge than genuine gut strings but produce a sound which is fairly equivalent. An average person would not be able to tell the difference.

For the price, you can't beat them. Real gut strings can vary in price from $60-$70 a set to $60 $70 per string! Genuine gut strings are becoming increasingly difficult to find and I have not seen them in music stores for several years now. You pretty much have to order them over the Internet from LaBella, Savarez or, of course, Aquila Corde. You also need to know what you're doing since they, in a wide variety of gauges.

These Nylagut strings are made with a softer polymer than are regular nylon guitar strings. They are a much lower tension string and they do stretch a great deal over the first week or so after you install them. (The first day is the worst!) Once they settle in however, they stay in tune just fine and and can last a year or better.

When performing on historical instruments, I still prefer using genuine gut, but for everyday use I've been using Nylagut strings for over five years on gourd banjos from the Banjo Factory and I have no complaints.

Because of their stretch, they are actually easier to tune when using friction pegs on the older instruments.Unless you are a professional performer or can otherwise justify the expense of genuine rectified gut strings, Nylagut is the way to go.
